FYI...Stefanie ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- CONFERENCE UPDATE AND FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS Catalyst '97 Conference: "Designing Eco-solutions" December 5-8th Canberra The Catalyst '97 Project is intended to promote the transition to a sustainable society and a healthy, ecologically-sound built environment. The papers received to date are wide ranging, including solar design technology, healthy housing, environmental policy and management, industrial and construction ecology, permaculture, ecophilosophy, waste management, eco-cities, professional ethics, healthy materials, bioregionalism. Over 100 papers. People from at least 17 different countries are coming and we are expecting about 400 people. The Project has wide community involvement with an advisory board representing 20 local organisations and groups. Architects will receive 20 PD Points for attending this Conference. ECODESIGN CHALLENGE Seeking eco-solutions: The Ecodesign Challenge is being run in conjunction with the conference to promote ecological awareness in design and to support innovative young ecodesigners. Many distinguished judges have offered their time to give feedback. DEADLINE EXTENSION: Due to the request of many who could not meet the Stage 1 submission deadline, we have extended the entry date until November 30th. Also due to demand, a new 'OPEN CATEGORY' has been included in the original four ecodesign issues. Contact us for details if you are a student/recent graduate who might like to enter. $12,000 in AWARDS: Entries will be judged December 4th and awards will be presented after the conference dinner on Saturday, December 6th. ABORIGINAL EVENING The theme of the open lecture evening is 'Search for Place', Aboriginal design and land use. The Ngunnawal Centre is collaborating in this event. A number of notable Aboriginal speakers will participate, and an Aboriginal dance team will also perform. FINAL CALL Papers, Panels and Workshops Abstracts and registrations are due SEPTEMBER 5th (exceptions only in adverse circumstances please). 'Instructions for Abstracts' are below. There are TWO streams: refereed (to meet DEETYA guidelines) or non-refereed. Please indicate your preference. Papers will be reproduced and distributed separately. Refereed papers will be edited and published after the conference in book form. 'Instructions for papers' will be sent to those who submit abstracts. Paper TOPICS: Short provocative papers that challenge the thinking of conference participants are invited on any subject within the realm of environmental philosophy, policy, planning and/or design. However, they should be geared toward eco-solutions, strategies or actions to maintain a dynamic focus at the conference. ABSTRACTS: DEADLINE: Hard copies of abstract (or email) should be submitted by September 5th, 1997 for vetting by the committee. Put address and name below the title please. DISK OR EMAIL: The final abstract should be sent on disk or by email immediately after notification of acceptance (October 5th), to enable the preliminary schedule and abstracts to be posted out before the conference. Please put name and address beneath title. Microsoft Word 5 (Mac) is preferred. LENGTH: Abstracts should be 250-300 words to fit on one A4 page. BIOGRAPHY: At the bottom of the abstract page, please include a 100 word personal description including research, professional or activist interests. FIELD TRIPS The field trips are being organised by a variety of relevant organisations and will take place in the 3 days following the conference.
