Six Billion and Beyond:=20
A leadership conference=20
on population growth and urban sprawl.
Why: Population will top six billion within the next two years. We =
need to take action now to meet the challenges this will bring.
Who: Forty selected community and student leaders from Ohio who want to =
create education and action campaigns on population issues for Earth Week =
1998 and beyond.=20
When: Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday Nov. 2, 1997
Where: The Driscoll Center, University of Toledo, Toledo, OH
Cost: =2450.00 -- includes registration and meals. =20
Some scholarship funds are available. See back for =
details.
Summary:
If Ohio=C6s population continues to grow at current rates, it will double =
in one hundred years, from just over eleven million to twenty-two million =
people. During this same period, global population is projected to grow =
from six billion to over ten billion. Is all this growth inevitable? =
No. Voluntary family planning programs have lowered birthrates dramaticall=
y in the last thirty years, but now the U.S. government is making drastic =
cuts to these programs. Six Billion and Beyond will explain some of the =
reasons for the cuts, and what you can do about them. =20
Clearly, some growth is going to happen. However, the effects of growth =
are not pre-determined. Bad planning decisions can make even moderate =
growth into an ecological nightmare -- Six Billion and Beyond will explore =
the impacts of unplanned urban growth, and how they can be avoided. =20
Six Billion and Beyond will inform you about population issues, give you =
ideas on how to take action and introduce you to other Ohioans who are as =
concerned about the future as you are. =20
