SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Restoration Coordinator will implement a program to protect/manage
biodiversity at a number of critical sites within the southern Lake Michigan
Watershed, and is primarily responsible for the proper maintenance and
management of Indiana preserves, easements and other sites with legal
obligations. S/he ensures that our partners preserves as well as TNC
preserves are managed to maximize desired biodiversity attributes.. S/he
will coordinate efforts with cooperating agencies, organizations and private
landowners to address stewardship/protection needs. S/he will enlist,
orient, train and direct volunteers to assist with the management of
biodiversity on natural lands. The Restoration Coordinator will guide a team
of Restoration Specialists, interns and volunteers. S/he is responsible for
coordinating restoration activities with the Program Coordinator, the Indiana
Field Office and our program partners in the Region. The Restoration
Coordinator is responsible for good neighbor relations at preserves and
serves as the primary contact for volunteer monitors and volunteer stewards.
S/he also handles preserve visitation inquires. The Restoration Coordinator
is supervised by the Program Coordinator and supervises no staff. This is a
two year position with possible extension.
DUTIES
1. In cooperation with public and private natural lands owners and
managers,
help implement a biological management and restoration program to enhance
regional biodiversity. Coordinate all preserve management projects to
maximize biodiversity attributes at regionally significant preserves (e.g.,
exotic species control, community restoration, woody vegetation removal,
prescribed burning, ) with other stewardship staff and volunteers.
Maintain established ecological monitoring programs to assess preserve
viability/effectiveness at maintaining conservation targets.
2. Coordinate preserve maintenance projects (e.g., trail maintenance,
posting boundaries, erecting entrance signs removing unwanted structures and
trash) with other stewardship staff and volunteers. Respond to and remedy
general problems on preserves including various forms of trespass,
vandalism, boundary disputes, attractive nuisances and dumping.
3. Coordinate field activities of Restoration Specialists, interns and
volunteers.
4. Participate on seasonal burn crews as needed throughout northwest
Indiana.
5. Maintain stewardship equipment and vehicles in good working order.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in resource management,
ecology, biology, or natural sciences or three years experience in natural
areas management. Knowledge of savanna, prairie, and woodland restoration,
taxonomy, and conservation. Knowledge of local flora and fauna preferred.
2. A thorough understanding of the unique environmental issues and
opportunities of northwest Indiana.
3. Experience with PC's and Windows software for word processing and
database development required.
4. The ability to motivate and coordinate a diverse volunteer work force
to
achieve quantifiable objectives. Ability to work with individuals,
organizations, corporations and local, state, and federal governmental
agencies.
5. Demonstrated ability to coordinate personnel efforts and work
cooperatively as a team member.
6. Demonstrated ability to work under adverse field conditions and long
hours in the field with minimal supervision.
