Assistant Professor Rhetoric
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
The Department of Rhetoric of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, invites
applications for a tenure-track position in the area of science, technology and
ethics. The Rhetoric Department offers a B.S. and an M.S. in scientific and
technical communication and an M.A. and Ph.D. in rhetoric and scientific and
technical communication. Founded in 1908, the Department also has a long
tradition of offering liberal education courses in the humanities, and in oral,
written and visual communication.
The Department is looking for a teacher and scholar who focuses on the ethical,
social, and cultural issues raised by science and technology, as reflected in
discourse. Special competencies may include one or more of the following:
Science, technology and society; agriculture and human values; rhetoric and the
environment; literature/culture and the environment; rhetoric of science;
science, technology and multiculturalism; communications technology and society.
Responsibilities:
Teach and develop departmental and college-wide courses in the area of science,
technology, and ethics. For example, such courses might focus on rhetorical and
ethical issues in certain of the following areas: biotechnology, environmental
ethics, agricultural sustainability, or animal welfare. Participate with
faculty in other departments across the college in the development and teaching
of ethical issues that focus on science and technology. Contribute to existing
departmental programs in humanities and rhetoric. Serve as advisor to
undergraduate majors and graduate students in the department. Engage in an
active and coherent research program.
Appointment, Rank, and Salary:
Nine-month, tenure-track position; rank of assistant professor; competitive
salary. Starting date is 16 September 1998.
Qualifications:
Minimum: Ph.D. in hand in Technical Communication, Rhetoric, English,
American Studies, Philosophy, Cultural Studies or closely related field.
Evidence of ability to contribute to existing programs in Department by
teaching and publishing.
Desired: The Department will prefer candidates with successful teaching
experiences, research and publication records, and interdisciplinary skills
appropriate to teaching and publishing on ethical and rhetorical issues in one
or more of these areas: Science, technology, and society; agriculture and
human values; rhetoric and the environment; literature/culture and the
environment; rhetoric of science; science, technology, and multiculturalism;
communications technology and society.

The Rhetoric Department plans to make a preliminary selection of potential
candidates early in December and hopes to meet informally with any of those
candidates attending the Modern Language Association meeting in Toronto in
December. Other potential candidates who are not attending the MLA meeting
will be contacted by telephone. We anticipate campus interviews in January.
