****CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS****
12th Annual National Feminist Graduate Student Conference:
Feminist Perspectives: Arts, Media, Activism
Madison, Wisconsin
February 5-8, 1998
Feminist discourse and feminist action operate in diverse areas of the
academy and society. At the 12th Annual National Feminist Graduate Student
Conference, we seek to encourage dialogue among feminists from the fullest
possible spectrum of academic disciplines and community organizations.
Previously called the Midwest/Mid-Atlantic Feminist Graduate Student
conference, last year's national response prompted us to reflect
nation-wide participation in the conference name.
We welcome proposals for performances, video/visual arts installations,
workshops, demonstrations, paper presentations, and panel discussions from
graduate students and others interested in participating in the engaging,
supportive environment of this annual exchange. Papers should be 20
minutes in length and panel sessions will be 90 minutes in length.
Keynote Presenters:
1) Tammy Baldwin, an out lesbian, is and has been a vocal supporter of
women's, lesbian and gay, and other social justice issues as a Wisconsin
State Representative. She is running for U.S. Congress.
2) Peggy Choy, a nationally acclaimed performer and University of Wisconsin
dance professor, engages issues of third world feminist resistance and
border-crossing in her work. Choy's piece, "Ki-ache: Stories from the
Belly," recently premiered in New York, and she has been profiled in Ms.
magazine.
3) Loretta Ross is Executive Director of the Center for Human Rights
Education. Her talk will be "Human Rights USA: Human Rights Challenges to
Global Feminisms." A life-long activist for women's rights, Loretta Ross
has been Program Director for the National Black Women's Health Project,
Director of Women of Color Programs for the National Organization of Women,
and has organized ground-breaking conferences on issues affecting women of
color and third world women.
