i am doing a small (but may work further on this idea in the future) paper
on cyber/cyborg feminism and its potential--as some have claimed--to end
oppression and open up the world. the whole topic baffles me a bit, i see
technology and the virtual world as A tool in opening up communication and
educating yourself and others about things going on and ideas, as well as A
way to liberate an individual (through chat rooms and the internet, a way to
leave the body and be whomever). however, these tools i have access to are
not available to many people. they are hardly available to the majority of
people in western countries, let alone people from the "third world". 2/3
of the world's women do not use the phone, i cannot pretend this
technological revolution i have been able to toy with is of much help to
them and their struggle for survival.
my professor made the comment that cyberfeminists are pro-technology and
ecofeminists are technophobic, so cyberfeminism offers more hope as most of
the world is ruled by technology and ecofeminism is a bit doomed because it
does not address the power of technology and feminists in techno-science. i
disagree.
so...this paper will focus on how ecofeminists are not technophobic. i
would not deny a (well-founded) suspiscion of technology and the
corporations behind todays global economy. i plan to discuss ecofeminist
fiction, web sites, ecofeminist scientists, and why cyberfeminism can be
alientating and elitist as well as where ecofeminism comes out of and its
goals in comparison with cyberfeminism. Also possible links between the two
notions and how ecofeminism is actually more encompassing and has more
potnetial.
i am probably taking on more than i can handle in a small paper with this
topic, but whatever comments or materials you have would be of interest to
me. if anyone is interested in finding out a little bit about cyberfeminism
