1. THE CONFERENCE - GENERAL BACKGROUND |
----------------------------------------
Artemisia 1998 is sponsored by Michigan League Programming and numerous
other groups on and off campus (please see the list below). The
conference is basically a three-day symposium (Fri, 3/13 - Sun, 3/15) to
increase awareness of relevant women's issues by providing professional
insight, a forum for the exchange of ideas and contacts, and guidance for
preparing women for the 21st century. We chose the name "Artemisia"
because it means the feminine life principle (similar to the Yin of
Yin/Yang), commonly known in its Greek representation as Artemis, the
goddess of the hunt and guardian of women.
The format of the conference will be following the standard three-day
conference format: the first day will consist of on-sight registration, a
welcome address/ keynote speaker, and self-enrichment workshops; the
second day includes the issues panels all morning and afternoon, and
entertainment for the evening; the final day will conclude the conference
with breakout sessions and closing remarks.

The range of topics and issues being covered at the conference include: Women
in Leadership, Minority and Mixed Women, Violence Against Women, Women in
Sports, Women in Literature, Women in the Sciences, Women in Art,
Self-Defense, Gender Roles, Sexuality and Sexual Orientation, Feminism
Across Cultures, Women's Health (including access and eating disorder
issues), Women in Politics, Grass-roots activism, and Women and
Spirituality.

4. THE CONFERENCE - SPEAKERS |

The speakers include faculty and staff from departments all over the
University (from the Medical School to the Political Science Department),
community leaders, private sector executives, etc. Some of these over 35
speakers include speakers, Ann Arbor Mayor Ingrid Sheldon, US
Representative Lynn Rivers, State Senator Alma Wheeler-Smith, State
Representative Liz Brater, Judge Libby Hines (15th Dist. Ct.), U of M
Provost Nancy Cantor, U of M First Lady, Jean Magnano-Bollinger, U of M VP
U. Relations Cynthia Wilbanks, TV Personality Vidya Shaker, world-famous
Indian classical dancer Sudha Chhandershaker, SAPAC Director Virginia
Chitanda, Rhodes Scholar Fiona Rose.

5. YOU - HOW TO REGISTER |
--------------------------
Artemisia 1998 is totally non-profit and the regristration fee goes
directly toward the cost of the conference (i.e. rooms, food, printing)
Your fee includes all speakers' events, all issues panels, Saturday
evening concert or theatrical performance, Friday evening banquet dinner,
breakfast, etc.
The registration fees are as follows:
