Hi Chris,
I'll give this to Lori right away. My son and I just returned from the
candlelight vigil, it was very moving to hear people (two church pastors came,
both they and their wives spoke in defense of human rights and the earth...
local reporters were dumfounded!). People who never come close to our
environmental efforts had strong comments. Handicapped, disabled people spoke,
too. Children were there with their parents.
Our community is small, very small and over 175 people came out in the cold with
candles to say No to this kind of intimidation.
Ordinarily when we set up a social action, recently in support of Leonard
Peltier, Free Tibet, Jihad Abdul Mumit, No War on Bagdad, or even in solidarity
against Matthew Shepard's senseless death, we have maybe 50 show.
No one expected such a convoluted course of events, with women's rights and Lori
breasts shining through the headlines (the issue, only three bare female backs
in the photo) the day before the firebomb and cross burning last Tuesday.
She has been a magnificent representative for all of life's rights through this
upheaval. Lori's an amazing woman. Television interviews, newspaper articles and
some of the best organizers in the pacific northwest to make sure the media and
aryan nations hear this. Tonight we made it clear that this was only the
beginning of a very strong and serious effort to unite our community against
racial hatred. Started yet another petition, only this time we're asking that in
our neighboring communities 10,000 people sign and our names will be printed in
the local paper. Over half the people here took petitions home with them to
circulate. It's a beginning.
We just learned last night that this has happened to interracial families in the
past, the local authorities swept it under the rug, families have moved from
this community because of this kind of intimidation. Diversity or Bust! Had we
known of these events we would have been able to counter directly in our town
sooner. Every one of us in the movement has strong opinions and participate up
north every time Butler rears his ugly head.
We will not let this rest. We will not wait for Butler. Something very odd, no
law enforcement, if so they weren't visible. Today someone posted a note on the
town's list serve saying that the enviro community did it for attention. So far
from the truth it stinks. Dick Butler is real, he is a serious lunatic who
really believes his followers have found a home in Idaho. Our legislator do
little to curtail this activity. House Rep Helen Chenoweth has spoken in favor
of militia groups, says the only endangered species in this country is the white
man.
Bertina's right, the northwest has much to explain. We went into this night in
peace. Far too many said they were afraid to attend for fear of retaliation
(fear and we wonder could our numbers have been double?) . Though retaliation
may happen the people here were willing tonight to say No. It's a beginning in
this town 80 miles from the white supremicist militia compound.
Thank the universe for people like House Rep Cynthia McKinney of Georgia in her
bravery to author the Forest Protection and Restoration Act and so many others
we call on for help outside of Idaho.... help is hard to find it here among
pacific northwest legislators.
Excellent questions, the most real questions that require answers, as soon as
possible. Aryan Nations up against Earth First! and the rest of our coalitions,
we won't back down. What a sight, 175 small town Idaho predominently white folk
singing 'we shall overcome' holding candles in freezing weather with television
cameras scaring the living daylights out of too many in line signing our
petition, damnit.
There were too many this week who surfaced in the local list serve and the local
papers saying that environmentalists, feminists are equal to the aryan nations
in their determination to restructure the system. Many, including the head of
the Communication department at the University of Idaho have said or written
that Lori, in many ways, deserved this retaliation by placing her Self in the
media eye.
So few actually know what we are doing, or why. There is so much work still left
undone. All of us here thank You, Gwendolyn, Jane and Every One who has sent
your strong vibes this way. Diversity or...
no, scratch that 'or'...make it the word
'and' instead...
