Subject: Earth Day Alert....250 + Buffalo Are Roaming outside the safe zone....

April 21, 1998

This evening finds over 250 Buffalo outside the boundaries of Yellowstone Park.

Numbers in the camp are limited...but folks are working from 5 am to 6 pm
and others til late into the night protecting the buffalo. (late into the
night because many buffalo are wandering onto the highway...one was lost to
a semi earlier this week.)

The snow in the Park is deep and the bare southern slopes on Horse Butte
looks pretty appealing to buffalo moms that are weeks away from calving.
Current conditions are icy in the mornings and slushy in the afternoons
which makes it difficult for the Montana Department of Livestock to do the
hazing they are reporting they wish to do. (they would have to get out of
their rigs and walk or ski.)
They currently say they aren't pulling out their guns, but we have to let
them know that we are watching them!

So... What can you do?
If you are in the area...come volunteer: cooks and field volunteers are needed.

If your commitments will not allow you to be there physically....
make a call or write a letter on earth day...
The White House mailing address is:
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, D.C. 20500
Bill Clinton can be reached at:
Phone: (202) 456-1414
Fax: (202) 456-2461

Even if you've called before...they still need to hear.

Thank you friends for your prayers and support,
May each new buffalo calf born this beautiful spring live a full free life.
May this "earth day" be filled with blessings.

Please call 406.646.0070 for more info...one person is in the office doing
radio and telephone support at all times...thanks

By the way.... Cold Mountains, Cold Rivers: one of the founding groups of
Buffalo Nations is announcing their new web site today.
Drop by and book mark it...check back often...

 TATANKA

They stand majestic on the land,
     Which Mother Earth provides,
And bring great strength to those who follow,
     And where great honor presides

     ~~~~~~~~~
Through time their gift of life and warmth,
      Gives comfort for all days,
They ask to roam, their freedoms right,
      In peace to live their ways.
       ~~~~~~~~~~

The time is now for us to act,
      To stand forth tall and strong,
To bring forth strength to help them back,
      Help  mankind right a wrong.

       ~~~~~~~~~~~
The buffalo calf now born in white,
      As prophecies come true,
The light of hope and peace will come,
      The old world will renew.
       ~~~~~~~~~~

It takes us all, the colors four,
      To work this Earthly gift,
As Miracle, the white born calf,
      Has brought about this shift.

       ~~~~~~~~~~~
The prayers and tears of Nations' hearts,
      Have drummed the sorrows clean,
And now it's time to bring them back,
      In strength, the Buffalos' Dream.
             MITAKUYE OYASIN!
