SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 5 (UPI) -- The Roman Catholic Church in Illinois
wants the General Assembly to impose a moratorium on the construciton of
large-scale hog farms until tougher environmental rules can be written.
The Catholic Conference of Illinois, which covers the Chicago archdiocese
and Catholic dioceses in Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and
Springfield,
said the hog farms are causing environmental damage and hurting the business
interests of small farms.
"At some point in time, we crossed the line and some of these facilities
became factories, not farms as we once knew them," said Cardinal Francis
George of Chicago.
"We believe now is the time for members of the General Assembly to pass
legislation that will halt the construction of any new large-scale facilities
for a period of time until solutions can be developed."
The Catholic Conference does not normally get involved in issues pending
before the General Assembly. But officials say the conference would want to
be
a
part of any negotiations involving the business and environmental concerns of
hog farms.
They note Roman Catholic officials in Ohio and Kansas have taken similar
views on the hog farm issue in their states.
George, in a written statement, said the conference's view was consistent
with the views of Pope John Paul II in his 1987 encyclical "On Social
Concern," which calls for people to be responsible for preserving natural
resources both for the present and the future.
Bills calling for a halt to hog farm construction until tougher
environmental rules could be written are pending before the Legislature.
Critics say they would place too many restrictions on hog farms, making it
impossible for them to be profitable businesses.

there are other elements as well as the magic that point to paganism in the
movies.
& as far as christians, most of the ones i have met mostly are of 2 types
either non-church going & claiming belief in god merely to fit in or converted
& church going & trying to save my soul as if it needed saving. unfortunately
the latter are the majority & a growing group.
I'm sick of being discriminated against just because i have a different
religion than them & then they claim ignorance of what they've done even
though they bloody well know what they've done. & don't even get me started
on that "god" people don't even realize the extant of his adverse impact on
this world. The environment was the first victim. womankind were next. i'm
also sick of being delegated to 2nd class citizenship merely because i have
the ability to bear children & because of that i supposedly can't do a job as
well as a man. in alot of cases i can do the job better than a man but am not
given the opportunity to prove it. so please don't get me started on this. I
know there are good people who happen to be christians & i treat people as
individuals anyway but I know the extant of perjorative influence that
religion has had over the centuries including this one & it's damn well time
for a change. & from what i've been told from the powers that be that change
is coming at last.
