Project support includes a grant of $6,000 to $12,000 and the assistance of 6 to 8 high school students for a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The students selected to participate in this program are gifted in the arts and humanities and interested in science. We welcome proposals for: o research projects that expose students to new scientific technologies and enable nonspecialists to make a tangible contribution to science o laboratory or field research o research in the life sciences, physical sciences, or archaeology o research conducted in North America or Costa Rica o research conducted by principal investigators and research institutions committed to the scientific education and personal growth of talented youth o projects that include graduate student mentors and/or other staff who can help provide 24 hour supervision for one's team. The fundamental purpose of Earthwatch is to foster work by scientists and to channel their findings and discoveries to broader audiences. EARTHWATCH INSTITUTE provides non-specialist volunteer labor and research grants ranging from $10,000 to $130,000 per year, depending upon the number of volunteers utilized and other factors. Successful research projects have been fielded in a wide range of disciplines from conservation biology, oceanography, and volcanology to public health, ethnomusicology and archaeology. Interdisciplinary projects are especially encouraged as is multinational collaboration. Both basic and applied research proposals are welcome. In 1998, EARTHWATCH INSTITUTE is awarding 130 grants totalling $3.1 million in support. This support is being generated by 4,000 volunteer field assistants.
