Columbus on trial for crimes in Honduras
They may be 500 years late, but Indians in Honduras began a symbolic =
trial of Christopher Columbus this week for alleged crimes committed =
during the conquest of America. Charged with genocide, robbery and =
destruction of pre-Columbian cultures, the Genoese explorer stands =
little chance of acquittal. "Columbus will surely be condemned to death =
for the crimes he and other colonizers committed," said Salvador Zuniga, =
coordinator of the Council of Popular Organizations and Indigenous =
People, which is holding the trial. Many Indians throughout the Americas =
view the arrival of Columbus in 1492 as the start of five centuries of =
