Re religions that pre-date Jesus, I have asked a friend of mine who is
knowledgeable on this area to comment.
I would also like to mention the Australian aborigines. They date back a
very long time ago and their complicated links with Earth and nature are
portrayed in old paintings and in songs and stories passed down through
generations.
They had great respect for the Earth and animals so I believe.
I listened to an elder Australian aboriginal talk some time ago and he spoke
of the fact that they put self limits on what each group could take from a
local lake and river system because they knew that greed would wipe out the
species of aquatic food that they ate if they took out too many.
