Yeah, i think you are quite right, that village communities of the past had
a much higher rate of religious and cultural agreement than we are likely
to find today.
I think some of these religions were toxic, with beliefs in negative
witchcraft , female circumcision or stoning left handed children to death (
ok, i made that up but you get the point). So i'm not harking back to some
golden age when everything was better.
We can't go back. Now we can hope that our humanism and tolerance for
others can fill the same need for cohesion. I think we have too many
religious beliefs. We could start and end it withe the golden rule, as far
as i'm concerned. I think a lot of the rest of religion is smoke and
mirrors we set up because we have trouble following the golden rule.
I don't think belief in who the creators were is as important as a
respect for all creation.
