I couldn't agree with you more. Throughout history gold has been a
disaster. Greed for gold has led to massive amounts of suffering and
death. I strongly support educating the public about the cultural and
environmental destruction related to gold mining.
I want to see the day when people will be embarassed to be seen wearing
gold and when the U.S. and other governments have sold all their gold
holdings. I want to see the price of gold driven to the lowest possible
level by lack of demand.
I am an environmental engineering student at Humboldt State University.
I would like to participate in a campaign to stop selling gold class
rings and make them out of less harmful materials.

People are attached (addicted) to the aura of value associated with
gold (much as they are to diamonds). Weaning them off this illusion
without a substitute is an extremely difficult proposition. Since
people already associate platinum with value, and since it has
become much more plentiful following the ending of the South
African sanctions and the collapse of the soviet regime (these two
areas, along with Canada, being our main sources of platinum), it
would be a psychologically feasible substitute. I do not know,
however, whether it is an environmentally feasible substitute, since I
am ignorant of platinum mining methods, and whether or not they
are more ecofriendly than those used to mine gold. Does anyone
out there have (or know where to obtain) any information on this?
