The Center for Global Education at Augsburg College announces that it is accepting applications until October 15th for its three spring 1999 undergraduate study abroad programs. Since 1979, the Center has offered nationally-recognized study opportunities in Mexico and Central America. Currently, it offers an additional semester study abroad program in Southern Africa. All of the Center's study programs include a unique combination of solid academic work, travel, and hands-on, experiential learning from varied resource people in the Two-Thirds World. WOMEN/GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT: SOUTHERN AFRICAN PERSPECTIVES is an intensive program of study and travel designed to introduce students to the central issues facing Southern Africa, with special emphasis on gender. The program, based in Windhoek, Namibia, focuses on the participation of women in struggles for liberation in Southern Africa, and on their emerging role in newly independent Namibia. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN CENTRAL AMERICA offers a unique experience in Central America. The program includes Spanish language study and a homestay in the Guatemalan highlands, a study of the church and social change in El Salvador, and an examination of economic development and social change movements in Nicaragua. GENDER AND THE ENVIRONMENT: LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES explores socioeconomic and political issues with a focus on the impact of environmental policies on the lives of women and men from varying economic classes and ethnic groups in Mexico and Central America. The program is based in Cuernavaca, Mexico and includes an orientation at the U.S.-Mexico border and a travel program to Costa Rica and El Salvador. The application deadline for all spring programs is October 15, 1998. The Center also offers two additional programs in Mexico/Central America and Southern Africa each fall term, including "Women and Development: Latin American Perspectives" and "Multicultural Societies in Transition: Southern African Perspectives." Over 800 students from more than 190 different colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada have participated in the Center's study abroad programs.
