Corrected: Greenpeace says finds toxic chemicals in toys WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Significant levels of toxic chemicals have been found in soft vinyl childrens' toys, the environmental group Greenpeace said Friday. Greenpeace said an independent lab found the chemicals, which belong to a class known as phthalates and are called plasticizers, in a wide range of toys. Many are designed for small children who were likely to put the toys in their mouths, the group said. Phthalates help give vinyl its flexibility. They are related to a chemical the industry voluntarily agreed not to use in 1986 after the Consumer Product Safety Commission found it could cause cancer in animals.
