(Reuters) - Stunned by the first death in the battle over California's redwood trees, environmental activists and lumber company officials accused each other Friday of taking unnecessary risks in their duel over the state's timber resources. Pacific Lumber Co. President John Campbell called on activists to stop the risky "cat and mouse" tactic of sending protesters into logging sites, which led Thursday to the death of David "Gypsy" Chain, 24, crushed beneath a falling tree. Gasoline or ethanol can power the customized vehicles, which have an Explorer-style chassis and right-hand drive as required by the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Once the 10,000 delivery vehicles are on the road, the Postal Service will have the largest fleet of ethanol-capable vehicles in the nation, according to Nick Barranca, Postal Service vice president of operations support. The new vehicles have aluminum and composite body panels and look like vehicles currently in use. The trucks replace an aging fleet of Jeeps.
