Ph.D. Opportunity in Plant Population/Systematic Studies.
The Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey,
Department of the Interior, is funding a Ph.D. position beginning in
January 1999 to initiate a molecular study of plant
population/systematics with Dr. Thomas Quinn of the University of
Denver, Department of Biological Sciences, in collaboration with the
Denver Botanic Gardens and the Biological Resources Division. The
candidate will gain extensive laboratory experience in an assortment of
molecular biological techniques in the study of the evolutionary history
and conservation genetics of threatened and endangered plant species and
populations of the Rocky Mountains. The candidate will also gain a
modest amount of field experience in the identification, survey, and
collection of botanical samples and in the estimation of population
range and size. The candidate should be highly motivated with
experience (through courses and/or research) in molecular biology, and a
strong interest in conservation and evolution. This graduate research
assistant (GRA) position has the potential of leading to permanent
employment with the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological
Survey (U.S. citizenship required). The Department of Interior is an
