*Home Depot is the the largest do-it-yourself retailer of wood products
in the U.S., and the largest retailer selling old-growth wood products
in the world.
*For years, Home Depot has made promises to get out of the old-growth
wood trade, but the store still continues to sell products made from
these trees. Last year, Home Depot promised citizen groups that they
would implement a policy to stop selling old-growth redwood. In April
of this year, they admitted that they never implemented that policy, but
then pledged to develop a comprehensive program to go old-growth free by
June 1. Once again, Home Depot has not lived up to their promises.
*Home Depot's commitment to stop selling old growth would be a huge
influence in the campaign for U.S. companies to limit or stop their use
of old growth products.
WHAT WE WANT: Home Depot to once and for all DEVELOP AND ENFORCE A
POLICY TO STOP SELLING OLD GROWTH. We are asking Arthur Blank, CEO of
Home Depot [ at (770)433-8211] to: 1) instruct the appropriate managers
to conduct an extensive audit to identify the original sources of all
wood products sold by Home Depot 2) instruct the appropriate managers
to develop an aggressive transition plan to end the use of old growth
wood products and replace them with third party independently certified
lumber or products derived from recycled or alternative fibers 3) adopt
and publish a formal policy, and timetable for its implementation, that
explicitly prohibits the purchase or distribution of any wood products
derived from old-growth forests 4) enlist support for this endeavor from
your board of directors
WHAT�S THE PROBLEM WITH USING OLD GROWTH?
*Old-growth Ancient Forests are among the most precious components of
the legacy we want to leave for future generations. They provide:
homes for wildlife, a source of clean water, spawning grounds for some
of the most valuable fisheries, nourishment for our minds and souls.
* Approximately 80% of the world's original ancient forests are gone.
* Less than 4% of the U.S. ancient forests are left - mainly in small,
fragmented areas.
* In British Columbia, (from where Home Depot buys its Cedar and
Hemlock) one acre of forest is clear cut every 66 seconds.
*The U.S. now gets roughly 12% of its lumber and paper from British
Columbia, and over 90% of everything logged in BC comes from ancient
forests.
*In the Amazon basin (from where Home Depot buys its Mahogany) an area
of rain forest the size of Belgium is destroyed each year.
* 25% of the world's population now consumes 75% of the world's wood.
* The US consumes more lumber and more paper than any other nation on
Earth.
* Paper/wood scraps are still the largest segment of "waste" in U.S.
landfills.
TAKE ACTION!!!: Please call Arthur Bank, CEO of Home Depot at
(770)433-8211 and urge Home Depot to stop retailing any products made
from old growth forests.
