Thanks for the Julia Butterfly quote - excellent quote. Regarding adding fuel
to the fire - we have to keep that fire alive inside of us - that fuels us to
care more, think more, debate more, reason more . . . If we simply throw
confetti in the air and blow kisses at each other - we are not facing up to
our obligation to stir the fire - to bestir complacency and to inspire
critical thinking. That is hard love! What adding fuel to the fire does is
inspires critical thinking> In some instances where it appears that we are
being personal or cruel - shouting at the computer - it is way just us
expressing something we feel strongly about without the fear of having someone
else disagree with it! It is OK if we do not agree with each other - we can
disagree and still love each other - many healthy relationships are based on
two people who agree on nothing but love each other because they admire the
other persons courage, intuitiveness, kindness, loving smile, etc. However,
put them together to talk about politics, ethics, religion and they disagree -
go figure! They disagree on issues but they still love each other! The same
can apply to people on listservs - I can disagree with someone but in one post
- that person can reveal something I would like to be - for instance
Marguerite - we disagree a lot about issues - however, I admire her love for
the animals!

Hello? I am Pro-Life, Pro-Choice, Pro-peace without violence! I was implying
that even those yet in womb may have rights. Do we know for sure that they do
not? How can we guarantee to the people who believe in eternal life that life
yet to be has not been planned in advance by a God who created the eternal
wheel? What evidence do YOU have that there is not some plan beyond our own
understanding?

vaccines and antibiotics are great - do not get me wrong - but they did not
come into existence without some error to animals.
++ Angela, I don't know why you are referring to animal testing when I
mentioned God as having given people the brains to find ways to save
themselves from disease. Animal usage in drug testing is often a unecessary
and many people campaign against the use of animals in research.
I referred to such discoveries such as the two important drugs developed
without
a dependence on animal research for their discovery - penicillin and the
smallpox vaccine. Both were discovered by clever, observant scientists. You
probably know the stories of both, but just in case:
The smallpox vaccine was developed by a scientist who noticed that everyone
in a particular village had contracted smallpox except one person: the
milkmaid. It appeared that the milkmaid had been exposed to cowpox through
her daily contact with cows, and her body developed antigens against the
cowpox and those antigens were effective against the smallpox. Cowpox is
closely related to smallpox, but much milder. The scientist began exposing
healthy people to cowpox (without testing his theory on animals) and found
that those people became immune to smallpox.
Penicillin was discovered accidentally by a scientist who noticed that germs
would not grow on certain areas of certain petri dishes in his lab. Upon
testing these areas, he found that those areas contained penicillin.
Just because a drug or treatment was developed using animal research doesn't
mean it couldn't have been developed *without* animal research. Furthermore,
almost *every* drug, cosmetic, cleanser, etc. has been tested on animals by
someone at some point, even natural ingredients and ingredients we would
consider to be foods. That doesn't mean that we need to thank animal
research for oatmeal soap or kohl eyeliner.
