Hi!

I believe we have a misunderstanding here! I put forth having faith in God as
an alternative to not having faith in God - as a way to cope with life's ups
and downs as a way to approach life from a faithful perspective. I did not
say that believing anything in particular would elimate self determination,
the need for birth control options and/or answer all problems in life _ It
would merely give you another view at life - maybe even new insight BUT not as
your own will but also that of the Creators.

Peace!

Hi! How then would you explain earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, tidal waves,
etc. etc.? Who has control over them? Humans? That is part of many human
destiny? What have we have proven - that we are connected to the great web -
just strands in it - we have proven that - and we have verified it by our own
misconduct - we are the NOT the head honchos of creation we are just part of
the plan! Then we ask who is the planner?

<< If there is a God then God has created humans and an
"Eden" and has stepped back to let us manage or caretake Eden. I don't think
 that
people have the common sense (collectively) to caretake this planet properly.
We have intelligence and seemingly God like powers in our abilities to
Genetically engineer crops (interfering with nature) and our ability (in
some cases) to prolong life but we lack *common sense*. Nature is part of
the world we live in and rather than have a respect for nature, humans
ignore the balance of nature and continue on their collective path to
 destruction.
  >>
Hi!

Yes - this is Eden and we are responsible for it! AND We have been given a
choice - free will - We can care for the planet or we can destroy it to our
own detriment - that is obvious - we have to choose to care for it - I agree -
Not all humans lack "common sense." The path of destruction was paved by the
industrial revolution - time to pave a new path to sustainability - EXACTLY
what people in the environmental movement are doing - Yeah for that! New
paths, new ways of perceiving, increased awareness, re-enforced faith in a
greater power, strong convictions - we need all these things (plus) to build a
more sustainable future!

Peace!

Subject: Overpopulation Book!

Hi!

Forwarded message regarding a new book dealing with overpopulation! Sounds
interesting!

Thanks!

WOMEN, POPULATION AND GLOBAL CRISIS:
A Political-Economic Analysis

Asoka Bandarage, Mount Holyoke College

It has been widely assumed that over-population
is one of the root causes of global crisis; even
amongst feminist and environmental movements,
the common wisdom on population has never
been seriously critiqued. This book provides that
critique; it gives a historical overview of the
population question and places the population-
poverty-environment-security debate within a
broad theoretical perspective.

The first part of the book looks at conventional
ideologies of population control -- from malthusianism
to the contraceptive revolution. In part two, the author
develops an alternative analysis of 'overpopulation' --
exploring the roots of the einvronmental crisis, violence
and inequality en route. Critiquing capitalism, industrialism,
patriarchy and white supremacy, she shows how population
control acts as another dimension of our essentially
hierarchical world order -- and one that is moving us
inexorably towards violence and destruction.

Finally, Asoka Bandarage explores new global visions
and efforts towards peace, justice and ecology - efforts
that place human and planetary reproduction above
economic production. Arguing for a new partnership
paradigm which stresses the interconnectedness of life,
the book's political significance lies in the synthesis of
third world, feminist, socialist and ecological thinking
and solutions.

A major contribution to the socio-historical analysis of
population-poverty-environment relations, this book
cuts across the North/South divide bringing to light the
dialectics of gender, race and class on a global scale.
As such it is essential reading for students and academics
in women's, development and environment studies as
well as in philosophy, social theory and
courses on ethnic relations.

<< Does the term Ecofeminism evoke thoughts of spirituality? Or is it
more often thought of as the combination of feminism and environmentalism
that
can be incorporated into a Catholic's beliefs as easily as a Unitarian
Universalist (or believer in Gaia, such as myself)?
  >>
Hi!

David - A simple definition of Ecofeminism is that the male domination of the
Earth and of woman - stem from the same root - I believe that cause is
spiritual! The spiritual belief that God is a white male - with that belief
then life is to be dominated by white men - What a mess that has caused!

If we do not deal with our different spiritual beliefs and ask ourselves why
we believe, what we believe and how what we believe effects other living
things then we will never elimate the male domination!

We also need to celebrate the feminine! We need gender reconcilliation (Chris
King is working on this - you may want to read his website!) Show that we
believe that man and woman are equal to God - Equally heir to a life a grace,
equally sacred creations!

Trying to resolve male dominance without dealing with spirituality is like
trying to revive a dying plant by overwatering it and all the while it was bad
soil - where the roots are! Drowning the poor plant - sort of what we do to
ourselves sometimes when we drown in confusion instead of trying to find
viable solutions! You will never cure the problem until you cure the root!
You will never cure anything unless you find viable soluations!
Peace!
