Greenpeace protesters stop newsprint shipment
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Reuters) - Four members of the environmental group
Greenpeace chained themselves to cranes on a 570-foot Canadian cargo ship
as it entered Long Beach, Calif., Tuesday in a protest aimed at saving a
British Columbia rain forest. The Canadian motor vessel "Thorsegen" was
carrying a load of newsprint, which Greenpeace claimed was made from trees
in the Great Bear rain forest. The protesters were in small boats when the
"Thorsegen" entered the port. About 10 jumped into the water to slow the
ship and four managed to get aboard when it veered sharply to starboard and
slowed, said Coast Guard spokesman Josh O'Brien. See full story
