>>You are right - the point I was making that there ARE enough resources on this
Earth - right now - as I am typing this to feed ALL of us - the problem is the
unequal distribution of these resources
++No Angela, the resources on planet Earth are finite. We are currently
surviving at the expense of mother Earth and and with the implication of
farming practices that are of great cruelty to animals and destructive to
the environment. You are obviously talking off the top of your head.
>>- Now, when you talk about
overpopulation being the biggest problem - I say no it is a problem - not the
biggest - the problem is the unequal balances - briefly these
1. Unequality amongst the sexes
2. Unequality of the distribution of wealth!
3. Unequality of the distribution of resources!
++All I can do is to shake my head in disbelief at your statements Angela.
You are clutching at straws. The CURRENT usage of resources (not the future
uses of resources) is leading to the rape of mother Earth on a scale never
seen before. Rivers are being polluted and the change of water flows for
agriculture
are causing further problems, the air is becoming more contaminated by
pollutants (we have "haze alerts" in my city and children suffering with
allergies to pollution - and I am supposed to be living in one of the most
isolated capital cities in the world!). We have mining of uranium and the
awful longevity of uranium waste to hand on to our children and there is so
much more.
++Yet you choose to say that we can stop malnutrition by spreading more
equally the wealth we have. I cannot take comfort in your words Angela. You
imply that
the excess wealth generated here in my country from the rape of the
environment can be distributed to the growing populations in countries like
Africa where growing numbers of people have denuded large areas of trees for
firewood thus depriving the animals and the land of the fauna necessary to
sustain life. By your analogy the devastation of the environment is a minor
problem as long as we can keep all the humans fed (in their growing numbers).
>>The word power should be synonomous with God - that would solve a lot of the
worlds ills -
"there's too many men making too many problems and not much love to go round -
can't you see this is a world of confusion." To quote Phil Collins!
++The word "power" should be synonomous with God? and you add a simplistic
blurb from a song to make your point? The power for change is with ourselves
Angela. We (the human race) are to determine our own fate. Those of us who
campaign for reduced populations and increased quality of life see no comfort
in Christian dogma. We live and work in spite of such protestations.
If we cannot stop human population growth, all our efforts to preserve the
environment will be futile.
In October 1993, representatives from more than 50 national Academies of
Science met in New Dehli and declared "Humanity is reaching crisis point
with respect to
the interlocking issues of population, environment and development...As
human numbers increase, the potential for irreversible changes of
far-reaching magnitude also increases." They called for governments to take
incisive action in order to achieve zero population growth within the
life-time of today's children. "With each year's delay the problem only
becomes more acute." they said.
"No goal is more crucial to healing the global environment than stabilising
population"
-Al Gore, US Vice-President
