Aborigines tell UN team Kakadu park at risk SYDNEY (Reuters) - A U.N. World Heritage committee inspecting Australia's Kakadu national park should immediately place it on the endangered list because of plans to create a uranium mine in the park, Aborigines said Tuesday. Jacqui Katona, spokeswoman for the Mirrar Aboriginal people, said the area's traditional landowners had told the U.N. team the mine would destroy Aboriginal culture in Kakadu - one of the reasons the park was granted World Heritage listing. "The Mirrar have put a very strong case about the political and social attacks that their culture has suffered as a result of the imposition of uranium mining and that represents the heart of the threat," Katona told Reuters by telephone from Kakadu.
