Autobiography and Changing Identities
CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PAPERS
27-30 July 2000
This conference at UBC will focus on autobiographies that involve a
significant displacement or reconstruction of "self" and identity on the
part of the autobiographical subject, including, but not limited to:
- Autobiographies of trauma
- Autobiographies around themes of multiculturalism,
diaspora, and migration
- Autobiographies of nation (i.e. self/subject and
community, self/subject and "nation," including
First Nations)
- Autobiographies around themes of gender and sexuality
- Autobiographies of social class
We are particularly interested in papers that explore non-literary as
well as literary uses of the autobiographical in relation to these
topics, addressing autobiographical representation in:
- Popular culture
- Visual art
- Oral histories
- Performance art
- Anthropological literature
- Film
- Dance
We also plan to edit a volume of essays based on this conference.
The conference language will be English. Proposals (500-750 words)
should outline clearly the scope of the paper and its aims. Twenty
minutes will be allowed for each presentation. Please submit a short
biographical note with your proposal and send it to:
