Supreme Court rejects endangered whale appeal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Supreme Court rejected Monday an appeal by
Massachusetts of a ruling that it violated the federal endangered species
law by not doing enough to protect Northern Right whales from commercial
fishing equipment. The case began in 1995 with the filing of a lawsuit by
an environmentalist Richard Max Strahan, an officer of GreenWorld Inc.
There are only 300 to 350 Northern Right whales in the western North
Atlantic, and the eastern North Atlantic population may be nearly extinct,
according to evidence in the case. See full story
