Faculty Position in Landscape History, Culture or Theory

The Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at
the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a faculty
position in the area of Landscape History, Culture or Theory. The position
is tenure-track and may be filled at the Assistant Professor, Associate
Professor or Professor level, depending on qualifications, effective July
1, 1999. Candidates at the Assistant Professor level (tenure-track) would
demonstrate clear potential for high quality teaching, research,
publication, and practice. Candidates at the Associate Professor or
Professor level (with tenure) should have a substantial record of high
quality achievements in teaching, research, publication, and practice. A
Ph.D. is highly desirable.
The department is committed to design that is environmentally
sensitive and socially responsible. The candidate should therefore be able
to address the history and theory of how such concerns have been and can be
incorporated into landscape architecture and environmental planning. An
ability to integrate design and planning is also highly desirable, as is an
interest in multiple spatial scales for design and planning. The candidate
should also be familiar with social science research methods for the
incorporation of social factors into design.
The College of Environmental Design consists of three departments:
Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning, Architecture and City and
Regional Planning. Each of the departments has faculty with research
interests in history, culture and theory. The candidate will have
opportunities to work with faculty throughout the college, which is
committed to strengthening its capacity in history, culture and theory.
The position will involve teaching an introductory undergraduate
survey course as well as graduate courses in methods and theory. Faculty
must also supervise student professional projects, theses, and dissertations.
