Hey yall, this is just a little FYI about the Gap's (incl the Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy) involvement w. old growth cutting. (and a national day of protest, if you're up to it). ~gwendolyn Dear Friends! Please join us for Gap Picket Day, on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving, which will launch a massive public-pressure campaign to stop out-of-control corporate greed from liquidating our Redwood forests! As most of you already know: The Fisher family, founders and executives of the Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy clothing stores, bought 230,000 acres of raked over Mendocino and Sonoma County timberland in July and are clearcutting, cutting the last of the old growth, and spraying herbicides as I write this. They are doing to Mendocino County what Maxxam is doing to Humboldt County (Headwaters). The forest lands that the Fishers bought from Louisiana Pacific are some of the most depleted Redwood forests in northern California. The Fishers are engaged in the final liquidation of these forests. Why? Once they�ve squeezed the last nickel�and remaining life�out of the forest, we anticipate real-estate development. The Coast Redwood forest and its dependent species, workers, and communities desperately need more defenders against this final assault. The Gap Picket Day parade and rally, featuring Lindy Hop dancers (Lindy Hop dancers are in the Gap's most popular TV ad), Julia Butterfly (who will be speaking to us by cell phone from Luna, the giant redwood she's been living in for the past 10 months), Starhawk, and others, is happening at 12 noon at Union Square in San Francisco on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 27, 1998�the biggest shopping day of the year. The Gap pickets are happening at selected Gap and Banana Republic stores in the Bay Area, Santa Rosa, and other cities (see below) from 12�5 on the same day. I have a dog and she is spoiled rotten. I can see the reasoning behind saying that they "are confined" and to "obey their master", but most animals are as happy as they could be. I'm sure that their are many pets that are treated improperly, but so are many children. So are we going to stop people from having children, that's impossible. If animals such as cats and dogs weren't family pets, then they would all be wild and they wouldn't have as long a life that they do now because they'd either be killed by other wildlife or shot by hunters.
