Free the Pekingese!
Of course this statement is ridiculous; we have bred them so long to
be lap puppies that they would die quickly in the wild. But since we
employed the Mendelian genetic modifications that left them helpless
in the first place, it is our responsibility to provide them with comfort
and care in our homes (the environment they - and many other
breeds - have been selectively bred to inhabit). Joe

If we freed the Pekinese in the city of Seattle, the cougars and wolves
that roam our city (yes, it's true) would not have to hunt as much ... Or
the bald eagles that nest in our parks. We actually lose a small number
of small dogs and cats each year to the predators who have adapted to our
green city and roam it at night.

Usually they dine on the racoons, squirrels, possums, and mice that also
graze in our backyards.

The larger cats here live quite well off of the small birds, as they can
count on being patched up by vets.

Even in the city the ecosystem continues. Hawks nest on our large
buildings and swoop down on the pigeons every day.
