In February, over a thousand queers-writers, readers, booksellers,
agents, critics, publicists, activists, performers, cartoonists,
librarians, journalists, publishers, playwrights and artists-will gather
for a weekend of socializing, kibitzing, problem solving, cruising, skills
building, film viewing, gossiping, sex, poetry slams and cultural debate.
They come to the OutWrite (TM) Conference.
OutWrite is the only national queer writers conference.
It brings published writers to their audience and introduces audiences to
new writers. It provides professional development training for both the
established and the emerging writer. OutWrite is a vital site for lesbians,
gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people- and their allies-in the
publishing industry to meet, deal, network and do business.

1999 K E Y N O T E S P E A K E R S
PRATIBHA PARMAR
Pratibha Parmar was a planned opening keynote for OutWrite '98 but
was unable to make it. She is an award-winning, internationally known
filmmaker whose films include "Warrior Marks" (a collaboration with
author Alice Walker), "A Place of Rage", "Khush", "Double the Trouble
Twice the Fun" and "Sari Red". Her most recent film "The Righteous
Babes", is about feminism and rock music, and features Ani Difranco,
Sinead O'Connor and Gloria Steinem. She is also the co-editor
of "Queer Looks: Perspectives on Lesbian and Gay Film and Video". Parmar
lives in London.
MARK DOTY
Mark Doty is an award-winning poet and author whose writings have
appeared in The New Yorker, Out, The Atlantic Monthly and The Paris
Review. His awards include Britain's T.S. Eliot Prize for the year's best
book of poetry. He has published five books of poetry, including "My
Alexandria", "Atlantis" and "Sweet Machine", and a memoir, "Heaven's
Coast". His most recent memoir, "Firebird", will appear in 1999. He
currently divides his time between teaching at the University of Houston
and his home in Provincetown.
BARBARA SMITH
The annual Audre Lorde Memorial Lecture will be delivered by
Barbara Smith, long-time scholar, activist, writer and editor. She was
co-founder and publisher of Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press. She has
edited/co-edited "Conditions: Five, The Black Women's Issue", "Home Girls:
A Black Feminist Anthology" and "The Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's
History". Her latest work is "The Truth That Never Hurts: Writings on Race,
Gender, and Freedom", a collection of essays. She is currently a
Rockefeller Fellow in the Humanities at the Center for Gay and Lesbian
Studies at CUNY.
PAUL BONIN-RODRIGUEZ
The closing plenary performer, Paul Bonin-Rodriguez, is perhaps best
known for his trilogy: "Talk of the Town", "The Bible Belt and Other
Accessories" and "Love in the Time of College". An award-winning
playwright, he is also a poet and dancer. He was a writer and producer of
Heritage, the PBS documentary on U.S. Latinos. He is a founder of the
B'Alamo Performance Co. and The San Antonio Dance Umbrella, and member of
Jump-Start Performance Co. His latest work is "Quincea�era", a
collaborative, multidisciplinary community outreach work reflecting on
fifteen years in the AIDS crisis.

OutWrite '99 will be held at the landmark Park Plaza Hotel in
downtown Boston. Take the subway from Logan Airport (or from South Station
if arriving by bus or train) to the Arlington St. stop of the Green Line.

Opening Plenary and the Audre Lorde lectures are ASL interpreted. Persons

Bromfield Street Educational Foundation is a queer progressive
foundation whose mission is to provide a wide range of community-based
forums for critical and strategic thinking about the future directions of
queer culture(s) and organizing, both within the LBGT movement and within
other progressive movements. The forums we provide explore the
intersections of politics, art, culture and theory.
BSEF strives to carry out its mission through five major
activities: the publication of Gay Community News, The GCN-Off-The-Page
Reading & Community Forum Series, the Gay and Lesbian Prisoners Project,
