This natural treasure, named a World Heritage Site in 1993, is threatened by a massive saltworks Mitsubishi is planning to build there. Its best chance for protection at the international level lies in getting the committee to add it to the "In Danger" list, a strategy that has worked before. When the Noranda Corporation sought to build its massive New World Mining Project just outside Yellowstone Park, our own government refused to step in until NRDC and other environmental groups successfully petitioned the World Heritage Committee to put Yellowstone on the In Danger list. Laguna San Ignacio is home to one of our planet's greatest spectacles: the annual gathering of hundreds of gray whales who swim 10,000 miles each year to mate and give birth in a sanctuary free of noise, container ships and urban pollution. Inexplicably, this is the location Mitsubishi has selected for the largest salt factory in the world, though salt can be mined almost anywhere. Besides putting the gray whale at risk -- just a few years after its recovery from near-extinction -- the factory also threatens numerous rare and endangered species in the surrounding International Biosphere Reserve. == What to do == Email the World Heritage Committee TODAY urging them to designate Laguna San Ignacio a World Heritage Site "In Danger" at the upcoming meeting in Kyoto, Japan.
