GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP - Ph.D. - MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

Research project examining the relationship between a unique coastal
current in Lake Superior and birds breeding and migrating along the
shoreline.  The project will examine biotic and abiotic factors that
influence the distribution and behavior or loons, grebes, ducks, and gulls
during breeding and migration.  Candidates should have a master's degree in
zoology, wildlife ecology, or related field, and a background in bird
sampling.  Experience with ship-based bird census techniques is desirable.
An ability to live and work on-board a large vessel as well as to operate
smaller boats is also desirable.  Graduate work will be done at the School
of Forestry at Michigan Technological University in cooperation with the
NSF funded KITES research project (http://chmac2.chem.mtu.
edu/KITES/kites.ssi).  Graduate assistantship including stipend and tuition
is available March 1999.  Starting date can be delayed until May 1999 if

structure, abundance of Canada yew (Taxus canadensis) and ground-nesting
songbirds.  The project will also investigate the effect of white-tailed
deer browse on yew distribution and songbird diversity.  Research will be
conducted in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin.
Candidates should have a master's degree in zoology, wildlife ecology, or
related field, and a background in bird and vegetation sampling.  Graduate
work will be done at the School of Forestry at Michigan Technological
University.  Graduate assistantship including stipend and tuition is
available March 1999.  Starting date can be delayed until May 1999 if
