Conservationists buy Maine forest AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A conservation group is buying 286 square miles of unbroken forest from a paper company in a remote corner of Maine and is pledging to preserve it and keep it open for recreation. The purchase, announced Tuesday by the Nature Conservancy, amounts to nearly 1% of Maine. The land, which includes a 40-mile stretch of the Upper St. John River in Maine's far northwestern corner, is being bought from International Paper Co. for $35.1 million.
