The Earth Proclamation & Great Millennium Peace Caravan of 1999
Dear friend and fellow activist,
We are planning to bring together a coalition of environmental, peace,
faith, spiritual, and millennium groups to organize a Great Millennium Peace
Caravan for the summer of 1999. The themes will be Transformation Through
Forgiveness and Earth Day Every Day. We will focus on creating a sustainable
and peaceful world through personal and planetary transformation. The caravan
will consist of artists, muscians, educators, muralists, sculptors, story
tellers, thespians, gardeners, dancers, lecturers, activists, futurists,
global visionaries, and authors. It appears that Protect All Life Forms will
lend the world's largest sculpture, a forty foot whale carved out of a
salvaged redwood tree, to the entourage. It looks like this will be part of a
world-wide peace initiative now that the Global Initiative is on board. We
will celebrate the Earth's biological and cultural diversity as we visit
social justice, environmental and peace festivals across the country. The
30th Woodstock Anniversary and Festival will be a major destination, as well
as the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Observance in Washington, DC and the World Peace
Festival in Armenia New York.

Please present this at your next board meeting for consideration and
endorsement by your organization. We would like to get 1000 groups and
individuals signing the Earth Proclamation by next year and also work on
saving California's redwoods. Can we work together? Please feel free to go
to Jean Hudon's Millenium Gathering Earth Concert web site to view or endorse
the original Earth Proclamation. This letter contains a variation of the
original Proclamation. I have been proposing new ways to vary the origional
to attract a wide coalition to save the Headwaters Redwoods. The World Peace
Prayer Society has endorsed the Proclamation as they suggested the last line,
May Peace Prevail On Earth. This was presented to the Peace and Justice
Commission of the City of Berkeley on March 2, 1998, I am a member of this
commission and read the following version at our public hearing on the Iraq
crises before 250 people on February 21, 1998, at the West Berkeley Senior
Citizen Center. It was endorsed by the City of Berkeley on April 30, 1998,
and by mayor Shirley Dean on April 25.
I have since been in contact with Earth Day International and on June 12
the Earth Day Network forwarded our butterfly project to its entire Earth Day
Network national and international email list. We plan to work with over
10,000 children in the Bay Area raising butterflies for the world's largest
butterfly release scheduled for Earth Day 99. To make sure all those
butterflies have a habitat, we will be encouraging area schools and gardeners
to plant butterfly gardens and use only indigenous butterflies. The event
will be covered on CNN and we are looking for sponsors.
Jerry Brown's We the People have placed on their agenda the installation of
butterfly friendly gardens in Oakland's parks, schools, and communities.
This was supported unanamously by the Peace & Justice Commission and
adopted by Berkeley City Council on Nov. 24, 1998. Council designated Alan
Moore as an official peace ambassador to the World Peace Candle presentation.
The United Nations Peace Caucus has offered to help organize the event.
The BGA has been asked to take the honourful task to present the World
Peace Candle to Mr. Kofi Annan next year on Saturday, 10th of July, 99 by the
Global Initiative and to get the support of other participants of the Tree
Island Millennium Gathering. The City of Berkeley officially endorsed the
project and designated Alan Moore as a representative of the City of Berkeley
on Nov. 24, 1998. Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco also endorsed the
project. The Peace Candle (presently in their office in Solothurn), will be
given to the Secretary General on the last day of the "Peoples Walk for
Peace." The Peace Candle has not been lit yet. It has been waiting since the
spring of 1995 with the following purpose: It shall be lit as soon as the last
nuclear weapon are abolished, as a first step to total disarmament. They want
this candle to be a gift for the UN, and would like the UN to provide a room
for it. There the candle would wait until the moment for lighting has come.
Private organizations cannot donate anything to the UN, only governments. They
plan to ask Ireland or Sweden since they are leading countries for nuclear
abolition. They also hope the BGA will endorse the idea of the "Peoples Walk
for Peace."
The BGA will attend the Hague Appeal for Peace Convention in May 1999.
They are interested in the butterfly peace initiative and an official
involvement for the BGA is being explored. The World Peace Candle will be
part of the Hague Appeal for Peace and we will most likely do a butterfly
release during a ceremony with the Peace Candle. The BGA will be returning to
the United States with the Peace Candle. It will be a part of the peace
caravan as it heads east.
When John F. Kennedy set a goal to land on the moon, he didn't just say
let's send a man to the moon. He said we'll send a man to the moon by the end
of the decade. He proclaimed a bold plan and a set target date. His vision
was realized. With your help we can do the same. World peace and
sustainability is not a dream, but an imperative. Please support the Earth
Proclamation as soon as possible.

Earth Proclamation & Prayer
WE ARE ONE PEOPLE...
WE SHARE ONE PLANET...
WE HAVE ONE COMMON DREAM...
WE WANT TO LIVE IN PEACE...
WE CHOOSE TO PROTECT AND HEAL THE EARTH...
WE CHERISH THE EARTH'S BIO AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY...
WE WILL CHOOSE TO CREATE A BETTER WORLD FOR ALL...
WE WILL BECOME STEWARDS FOR THE PLANET'S THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES...
WE WILL DEFEND AND PROTECT THE RAIN FORESTS, REDWOODS, AND OTHER SACRED
PLACES...
WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO MAKE THIS DREAM COME TRUE...
WE WILL DO THIS FOR OUR CHILDREN, AND OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN...
WE WILL CHANGE WHAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED...
WE WILL BREAK FREE OF OUR CHRYSALIS LIMITATIONS...
WE WILL JOYFULLY LOVE, SHARE, AND FORGIVE...
SO THAT PEACE MAY PREVAIL ON EARTH!
MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH! (This is our prayer. At ceremonies, repeat this
line to each of the four directions.)
Personal Commitment: I, the undersigned,
aware that human activities are seriously endangering the fragile ecosystems
of our planet,
aware of the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots,
aware of the need to direct my energies to protect and restore the global Web
of Life,
Decide to begin right now to strenghten my ways and values, and change
whatever still needs to be changed in myself and around me.
I want the year 2000 - a symbol for a New Beginning - to be the turning point
in the local and global efforts now underway to create a better world based on
equality, justice and a sustainable planet -- a world in which Peace on Earth
prevails. Understanding that we are all individually responsible for the kind
of future we will create for our children and for countless generations to
come, I will participate in initiatives, locally and globally, to transform
our world and protect this Jewel of Life we call Earth.
I agree with this Earth Proclamation and the goals of the Great Millenium
Peace Caravan and personally commit myself to do all that I can to spread it
throughout the world and help make our shared dream of Peace, Love and Harmony
on Earth come true.

In preparation for the year 2000 millennial celebrations that will take place
all around the world, an international effort has arisen to use this
opportunity to create a sense of anticipation about the great changes that can
occur for the well-being of all people and all life forms on Earth. We

of humanity's role for our future and ask that you help copy and spread it
throughout the world.
If everyone reading this for the first time decides to introduce one more
person, everyday, to this common goal hereby described, millions of people
will have a chance to make this personal commitment by the year 2000.

Whereas, The Butterfly gardeners Association, headed by Alan Moore of
Allentown, is being recognized and honored for its inspiring work in raising
global consciousness and promoting environmental stewardship, education,
conservation and world peace through the symbolic beauty, transformation and
life of butterflies. The Butterfly Gardeners Association was created in 1993
by Mr. Moore to promote an understanding and appreciation of butterflies. But
the organization has a much deeper meaning, which is to promote world peace
and a more peaceful, productive society by uniting people all over the world
using butterflies as a catalyst for love, peace, teamwork and global
understanding. Thousands of volunteers have spoken throughout the country on
the importance and beauty of these creatures, and they have been an outspoken
advocate of building butterfly gardens and sanctuaries; and
Whereas, Dedicated members of the organization have planted butterfly gardens
at nursing homes, hospitals, churches and schools throughout the country and
created the largest butterfly garden in Pennsylvania at Bushkill Elementary
School. They have also coordinated hundreds of butterfly releases at numerous
events, including the Earth Summit held at the United Nations in June 1997.
These simple, beautiful creatures touched the life of one man, who in turn has
worked diligently to motivate thousands of people into working together
peacefully to save the planet and promote harmony and understanding throughout
the world.
Now therefore, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania pays tribute to the Butterfly Gardeners Association for their
extraordinary and devoted work, which is truly an example of how a group of
inspired and dedicated citizens can make a real difference in our society;
offers best wishes for success in all future endeavors;
And directs that a copy of this citation, sponsored by the Honorable Charles
W. Dent on August 4, 1997, be transmitted to Alan Moore, Butterfly Gardeners
Association, 1021 North Main Street, Allentown, Pennsylvania 18104.
