I think the Marilyn Waring book is called 'Counting for Nothing'. MW used
to be a member of Parliament in New Zealand - a member, interestingly, of
the conservative National Party. It was, in part, her crossing the floor
(that is, voting against her own party) that led to the election which
brought down the National government in 1984 - I forget the issue now. The
Labour Govt which replaced it was little better - Roger Douglas, Minister
for Finance, was something of an apostle of Thatcherite monetarism. The
National Party now holds government again, although recent changes to the
electoral system mean that the outcome of the next election is pretty
difficult to predict. I'm not quite sure what MW is doing now, but I think
she may be working in academia. Can anyone tell me?
