Director General
ICIMOD

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain
Developoment (ICIMOD) was established in 1983 to promote an
ecologically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem
and to improve the living standards of mountain populations
of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan area, which includes all or part
of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the People's Republic of
China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. ICIMOD operates
at the interface between research and development and its
statutory activities include

(i) documentation and information exchange,
(ii) research,
(iii) capacity building, and
(iv) advisory services.

ICIMOD's funding comes from regional and non-regional
governments, multilateral agencies, and private foundations.
It has an international staff of 25 among a full-time staff
of 130. The Director General is answerable to an
independent, International Board of Governors, which is
advised by the ICIMOD Support Group. The Centre is located
in Kathmandu, Nepal. ICIMOD's activities are conducted in a
cooperative, team-based management style in which research
and development institutions in its Regional Member
Countries and other international research bodies play an
important role. At present the annual budget of ICIMOD
exceeds 5 million US dollars. Three divisions address issues
related to Mountain Farming Systems, Mountain Natural
Resources, and Mountain Enterprises and Infrastructure,
while three other divisions are engaged in Application of
GIS and Remote Sensing, Outreach and Communication, and
Administration and Finance. The Director General, the
Director of Programmes and the Head of Administration and
Finance constitute the Directorate of the Centre. More

visionary, strategic and professional and managerial
leadership and has overall responsibility for the effective
and efficient management of the institution. This includes
strategic planning, staff recruitment, public outreach, and
fund raising. He also represents the Centre at key regional
and international events. The position entails frequent
travel throughout the HKH. Qualifications required for the
position include: substantial professional experience in
organizational and institutional development as well as
policy advice and research management. Experience in the
implementation of integrated sustainable development and
environmental management programmes in mountain areas of
developing countries, preferably in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan
Region would be an advantage. The candidate should have an
established record of institutional management at the
highest level, of leadership and motivation of
multidisciplinary and international staff of senior
scientists and other development professionals and of
professional experience in inter-institutional networking
and an ability to attract funding. Substantial experience in
high-level executive positions in relevant international
institutions would be particularly appreciated. Candidates
may be of any nationality and their age should not exceed
54. They should be in excellent health and able to travel up
to 5000 meters above sea level. The working language of the
Centre is English. The salary and allowances of this
exceptionally challenging post will be commensurate with the
high qualifications and experience required comparable to
equivalent high-ranking positions in international
organizations. The Director General will be appointed for an
initial four-year term. Extension for an additional
four-year term is possible, depending upon a successful
review by the ICIMOD Board of Governors of programme
accomplishments and management. It is anticipated that the
successful candidate will assume the position of ICIMOD
Director General not later than 1 March 2000.

programmes, and advisory services,
(iii) ensuring integration and coordination of programme
activities,
(iv) acting as the focal point for a strong monitoring and
evaluation system to ensure that programme activities
achieve desired results and impacts,
(v) interact with local, national and international
institutions and organizations to identify priorities for
ICIMOD's work and develop collaborative programmes, and
(vi) develop together with the Director General an overall
strategy of the Centre and advise him/her on programme
management.

Qualifications for the position include Ph.D or equivalent
in natural or social sciences with development experience,
substantial professional experience, and achievement in
mountain development related research management and/or
policy advisory services of which a part will have
preferably been undertaken in the HKH; experience with
sustainable development policy issues in the region;
demonstrated managerial experience, the capacity for
intellectual leadership and skill in working with
colleagues, collaborators, and donors; sensitivity to
relationships in a multi-national and multidisciplinary
environment and a successful track record in managing
research and development activities. Willingness to
undertake frequent travel to mountain areas in the region.
Candidates may be of any nationality and their age should
not exceed 54. They should be in excellent health and able
