SAVE THE CHILDREN CANADA WANTS A
TRAINING ADVISOR - DISASTER PREVENTION 
AND MANAGEMENT IN ETHIOPIA

Save the Children-Canada (SCC) is a child-focused international
development and aid agency working both overseas and in Canada to
improve the quality of children's environment and lives. SCC currently 
operates programs in 10 countries. Funded by the Canadian 
International Development Agency (CIDA), a four-year second 
phase of the Ethiopia (Environmental) Disaster Mitigation Project was
launched in April 1998. One of the main project components
includes policy familiarization; early warning systems; and employment
generation schemes, supported through a comprehensive package of
training and technical backstopping, action research, pilot projects and
material inputs. The Training Advisor will be posted in Addis Abbaba.
She or he will be responsible for overall management and 
implementation of the training component of the project including 
training needs assessment; design and testing of  training modules, 
guidelines and materials; performance measurement 
and evaluation of training programs; training of trainers; and 
development of training work plans, budgets and reports. 
The duration of post is two years (with possibility of one year

TENNESSEE WANTS ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH INTERNS

The National Center for Environmental Decision-making 
Research (NCEDR) and the Southern Appalachian Man 
and the Biosphere Foundation (SAMAB) in Tennessee are 
sponsoring a ten-week summer student internship program 
to run from June 7 through August 13, 1999. The program 
is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in 
public policy and administration, environmental science,
planning, natural resource management, business, decision 
research, and related fields. NCEDR/SAMAB will place 
selected students with environmental decision makers around 
the Southern Appalachian region. Interns will develop 
individualized projects with their host organization around 
one or more environmental-decision issues, observing and 
studying the decision-making process and its context. The 
interns will gather periodically for seminars on environmental 
research and decision making, rotating so that each mentor/host 
organization leads one presentation reflecting their perspective 
on decision making. Interns will be paid a stipend and be provided 
a work place, work experience, and mentoring by the organization 
in which they are placed. They will be responsible for their own 
housing and board. (NCEDR/SAMAB and the host organizations 
will assist in locating appropriate housing, which may include

AGRICULTURE LAND USE SCIENTIST NEEDED 
IN CALI, COLOMBIA

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Cali,
Colombia wishes to appoint a Senior Scientist to lead its project 
in Environmental Sustainability and Agricultural Land Use 
Dynamics. The project conducts research on sustainable land use 
and environmental management in Latin America. Responsibilities
include supervision and leadership of a multi disciplinary group of
scientists, including the CIAT GIS facility.  The scientist will work
closely with other CIAT projects to support the development of 
options for improved land use management, and capacity building 
in national programs (NARS) through institutional partnerships and 
training, including supervision of Ph.D and M.Sc. candidates.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and experience related 
to agriculture, environmental studies or land use. Good English 
speaking and writing skills are required. Spanish is desirable but 
not required. The appointment will be as Project Manager, based in

Resources (CEMARE), Department of Economics, University

Associate in fishery economics. It is a fixed-term contract to

U.S. NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OFFERING
EPA RESEARCH GRANTS FOR ENVIRO ECONOMICS

The U.S. National Research Council is accepting applications 
from U.S. citizens for research associateship awards at the 
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Risk 
Management Research Lab, Cincinnati, Ohio in the field of 
Engineering and Economics for Full Cost Analysis for 
Environmental Projects. The U.S. EPA�s Office of Research 
and Development has recently undergone a major 
reorganization in which a greater emphasis has been placed 
on in-house research.  The Systems Analysis Branch of the 
Sustainability Technology Division (STD), National Risk 
Management Research Laboratory-Cincinnati, is developing 
a in- house research program based in the area of cost- effectiveness 
analysis that can be more directly supportive of the Agency�s 
benefit- cost analyses in the weighing of regulatory options. 

While the laboratory has principally an engineering focus, it 
wishes to strengthen its capabilities in the combined field of 
economic/engineering analysis as related to pollution prevention. 
The ideal candidate for this Research Associateship is a person 
with a background in chemical, environmental and cost engineering, 
and with advanced training in standard economics. The candidate 
should possess a good understanding of microeconomics, benefit- 
cost analysis and social costing (shadow prices), quantitative 
techniques and be capable of providing guidance to other 
laboratory personnel on the calculation of costs for engineering 
systems when market prices are incorrect, as well as on other 
pertinent economic techniques. A good familiarity with the field

WWF NEEDS MADAGASCAR OFFICER IN SWITZERLAND

WWF is seeking PROGAMME OFFICER for its Africa/
Madagascar Programme Based in Gland, Switzerland. The 
Programme Officer will provide technical support for the

Demand for water is rising, over half Europe�s wetlands have been 
lost, and pollution threatens the functioning of ecological systems and
