The Ninth Annual Interdisciplinary Conference for Graduate
Scholarship
Friday, 9 April 1999 at Rutgers University

Sponsored by the Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary
Culture and the Rutgers Graduate Student Association, the annual
Interdisciplinary Conference for Graduate Scholarship provides a
national forum for advanced research by graduate students. The forum
emphasizes contemporary issues requiring interdisciplinary
approaches, and focuses on the subject of this year's work at the
Center.
"The 'American Century' in the Americas, 1898-1998" proposes a critical
retrospective on the history of the Americas over the last hundred
years as well as a reflection on the dramatic changes now under way
and their implications for the new millenium.
We encourage the investigation of a broad range of topics, including
but not limited to:
Migrations and their effects -The shaping of cultural identities
-The literatures of the Americas -Racial politics in the Americas
-The work and the discourses of development -Imperialism and
globalization -Latina and U.S. feminisms -NAFTA: History, ideology
and economic practice -Indigenous cultures, politics, ecologies
-The causes and consequences of narcotraficking -Neo-liberalism in
the Americas -Social movements and the political process -Latinola
identities and the political process -Crossing the borders.
Papers should be 8-10 pages. Please send 4 copies of: your paper
(draft), a cover page that includes your address, telephone number,
and departmental affiliation, and a one-paragraph abstract describing
your work. Panel proposals will also be considered.
