Gore to commit funds for N.Y. Harbor ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Vice President Al Gore committed the Clinton administration to dredging soil and silt in the Port of New York and New Jersey to keep one of the nation's largest ports from losing business to harbors with deeper water. The administration will include $60 million in next year's budget to deepen a channel in New York Harbor from 40 to 45 feet. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey signed an agreement that commits the federal government to paying $550 million to dredge the port through 2004. The government has recently begun spending more money to deepen U.S. ports up and down both coasts to allow them to handle a new generation of huge cargo ships.
