The Guardian today (23.11.98) reports that 'Russians claim to unearth
steppes' ancient Amazons' p.13

Russian archeologists digging in 2400-year-old Scythian burial mounds
(called kurgans) found five of 21 graves contained the bodies of young
women with their weapons.
The article goes on to say that this evidence, along with older finds in
the Ukraine, the lower Don and the Ukok plateau tend to support
Herodotus' tales of the Amazon warriors though the new theory is 'far
from the bloodthirsty picture painted by Herodotus.'

There are many kurgans still buried that the Russian team would like to
unearth before they're destroyed by farmers, but they need money.
