federally protected sea lions and seals when they prey on a declining fish
population such as salmon, says a federal report to Congress. The report by
the National Marine Fisheries Services says the rapidly growing populations

agency's Northwest region administrator, said, "We do know that sound

Police to protect wildlife in India

GUWAHATI, India (AP) - The Indian government will deploy an armed police
force to protect endangered wildlife from poachers and save forests from
timber smugglers, officials said Saturday. A special battalion will be
deployed in northeastern states, including Assam, where poachers are
killing tigers and the nearly extinct one-horned rhinoceros in wildlife
sanctuaries. At least 600 rhinos and hundreds of tigers have been killed in
the past 10 years in wildlife sanctuaries across the country. Forest guards
with batons and obsolete guns have proved no match for heavily armed gangs.
Tiger bones, rhino horns and animal organs are in great demand in Asia and
are used in traditional Chinese medicines for treating sexual problems. See
