Miami, County clash over ruins

MIAMI (AP) - The mayor wants to preserve centuries-old Tequesta Indian
ruins discovered on the site of a planned downtown high-rise, but the
financially-strapped city can't afford to fight the property's developer
and is turning to the county for help. "I have the responsibility to do
what is right for past civilizations. But I have a greater responsibility
to the present civilization," Mayor Joe Carollo said Tuesday at a city
commission meeting. City leaders would like the 500- to 700-year-old stone
circle left as is instead of being moved or sharing the site with the
planned waterfront apartments, but they fear a legal battle could bankrupt
