This sounds ideal, almost like a utopian community.  However, it doesn't
seem to be the direction in which our increasingly global society is
heading.  The emphasis on consumption seems always to be growing. 

Do these exist anywhere?  I'm interested in the idea of collective living,
especially if it can be done without calling for tremendous compromise in
an individual's decision making capacity.  The only example I know of are
kibbutzim in Israel (I'm planning to volunteer on one this summer).  

Does anyone know of others, particularly in the Southeast US (I go to
school in
Atlanta).  I am aware that collectivity is a broad term, but any examples 
would be helpful.  I would love to see how they work even in the absence
of the cultural ties which seem to make kibbutzim effective when so many
collective situations have not.
