A little while back, (un)leash asked about "practical discussions about
people's experiences" in returning to a simpler life.  Rain Magazine, some
articles from which are available at  http://www.rainmagazine.com/  seems to
specialize in such stories, and may be of interest.  There's a lot on
transport, but it does seem to cover other aspects too.
