(AP) - Efforts to preserve a vast chunk of Northern California's Headwaters Forest suffered a major blow as a timber company rejected a $480 million deal that would have set aside majestic stands of ancient redwoods for the public to enjoy. State and federal officials approved the proposal after lengthy negotiations, pleasing environmentalists by demanding protection of streams and wildlife habitat throughout the company's holdings in California. But Pacific Lumber Co. turned it down Friday, saying the deal could financially cripple the 130-year-old logging company and force layoffs. (AP) - Led by a Lakota Sioux spiritual leader, about 100 members of American Indian tribes are on a pilgrimage asking for an end to the killing of bison that wander out of Yellowstone National Park. They are bearing witness to the sacred relationship between the buffalo and Indian people, said Joseph Chasing Horse, a traditional Lakota Sioux leader who helped organize the event. For many Indian people, eating the flesh of bison is comparable in religious significance to Holy Communion among Christians, who symbolically eat the flesh and drink the blood of Christ, Chasing Horse said.
