As a returned Peace Corps Volunteer I can discuss neocolonialism first
hand! When I went to Honduras, I was a naive just-out-of-college kid
and had no clue that my "mission" was actually to show Central America
how great the US was and evil communism could be!! I thought I would
go there and breed a super cow (my major was animal genetics) that
could eat poor quality food and produce lots of milk to feed the
country. Luckily this attitude did not persist. I learned so much
from these amazing people and I think I passed nothing on to them
except amusement. I went to Central America in the midst of the
Contra wars, when Reagan was President and the "evil" Communists were
practically in Texas! And believe it or not, I still did not feel
like I was a pawn of the US government! At that time, Honduras (which
is the size of the state of Ohio) had THE MOST Peace Corps volunteers
in the world. That is neocolonialism in the worst way...to use young,
idealistic, enthusiastic people in the name of PEACE to further the
US's acts of war!! When I think of my experiences there and in other
countries in Central and South America, I would not trade them. I
wish they were not tainted with neocolonialism, however. Nan
