 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Director of Education, Office for Social Responsibility

The Union Institute, a national university dedicated principally to
baccalaureate and doctoral degree programs for adults, is seeking a Director
of Education for an applied research unit, the Office for Social
Responsibility (OSR). The Director, working in collaboration with the
university's national faculty and student body, and with OSR staff, will
help conceive, design, and develop initiatives that connect degree programs
to projects in the Social Responsibility division, including its Center for
Women (CW) and Center for Public Policy (CPP).

The Office for Social Responsibility works to promote social, economic and
political justice through participatory research, innovative coalition
projects, and the development of critical, community-based leadership. To
achieve these ends, CPP has focused primarily on the role of nonprofits in
promoting the public good, CW on bridging the gap between theory and
practice in the field of Womens Studies and in womens movements, and OSR
on exploring issues of civic engagement and civil society.

Key Responsibilities

initiatives that accord with OSRs mission by drawing on the expertise of
individuals in those populations.

Creates conferences, seminars, and other academic opportunities that support
Union Institute degree programs while affirming OSRs mission.

Develops program designs and grant proposals for new projects that create
linkages between the Institutes academic programs and OSRs activities.

Provides support to university faculty, students, administrators and to
Center staff in serving the above purposes.

Works to support collaboration among the Centers housed in OSR.

Qualifications
Successful candidates will have: a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline. Strong
organizing and project development skills, along with adult education and
publication experience, are essential. The Director must be an excellent
verbal and written communicator and possess superb interpersonal skills.

a history of involvement in social change work is preferred.

Candidates should send a letter of interest, a resume, and a salary history
no later than April 16, 1999 to:
