It is a touchy subject for third-world feminists to address, but the uncomfortable
fact is that the overwhelming preponderence of female genital mutilation (with or
without consent) is performed by the "respected elder" women (just as most male
circumcision is performed by men). People of all genders and ethnicities
unfortunately can be, and often are (via adherence to execrable outdated traditions,
religious and otherwise) their own most virulent, stubborn and insidious oppressors,
and all kinds of people need to be freed primarily from themselves and their own
prejudices.
