Update: Environmentalists oppose greenhouse credits bill

WASHINGTON (AP) - Environmentalists are joining critics of the Kyoto
climate treaty in opposing legislation intended to spur voluntary
reductions in greenhouse gases. The legislation would guarantee government
credit, should the treaty take effect, to companies acting early to curtail
heat-trapping gases. The measure has sponsors from both parties and was
seen a few months as likely to pass. But some environmentalists now fear
the bill would allow credits for emissions not verified and for various
measures that do not directly reduce the amount of greenhouse gases
emitted. Some critics also are opposed because they say the legislation
